Oaks for the Future

‘Oaks for the Future – promoting protection and sustainable management of the oak trees of Cyprus’
This project aimed to survey, assess and work for the protection of woodlands and trees of the two oak species Aleppo Oak (Quercus infectoria) and Kermes Oak (Q. calliprinos).

The project purpose was to support the relevant authorities in meeting their responsibilities to halt the decline in oak woodland and oak trees of these species across Cyprus. The actions taken and results achieved thereby have contributed to a greater goal of reversing past declines of oaks, by establishing and protecting larger patch sizes of oak woodland covering a much greater total area. This contributed in turn to reduce soil erosion and better watershed management, the well-being and abundance of a number of species associated with oaks and to the regeneration of a habitat that forms an important element in the cultural and natural heritage of the island.
